The Science of Daily living: role of OT in Health and Wellness

Occupational Therapists believe human beings have an innate need for meaningful occupation. This occupation is not just your job or paid employment but the every day acts of daily living that make up our lives. It is through doing that we find meaning, purpose and quality of life.

The role of Occupational Therapy is to support people in participating in the activities that they want to or need to do. Without these we see decline in health and wellness. Examples include disability, illness, injury or ageing.

Occupational Therapy can help people all across the lifespan to address the challenges these physical, cognitive or mental health difficulties create; to engage in that which brings health and wellness.  We do this through thorough targeting the person, environment and occupation; to provide assessment and intervention.

The beauty of being an OT is that this gets to be both an art and a science as no two people are the same so their therapy and solutions to enable engagement in activities of daily living needs to be different too. In my experience as an OT I have had the privilege of working with children through to persons 100+ years old; on work sites, with horses, by the beach or in the bush, to look at boats, bedrooms, bathrooms and wheelchairs. It is the most incredible calling, to watch people journeys to health and wellness, through the power of what we do.
